Joining 4-H costs considerably less than sports. It is not just about animals. Availability of projects is dependent upon adult volunteers. Commitment may vary by region. Where my kids grew up, the commitment is 1 club meeting per month (where all the projects come together) and generally 1 meeting a month per project.
Our club offers cooking, Arts & Crafts, archery, guitar, hunter safety, community service, in addition to animal projects in swine (pigs), sheep, goats, dog obedience, and poultry. Other area clubs offer projects in rabbits, cavies, public speaking, sewing, and so much more.
My interest in hobby farming led me to inquire about 4-H when I saw a flyer at my child's school over a decade ago and I have never left. My kids have enjoyed summer camp, leadership conferences, animal symposiums, judging competitions, and county fairs and have learned to raise their own food and many life skills including responsibility and respect.
There is so much more to 4-H than any one person can explain. You can do as little or as much as you can manage. I welcome questions and hope to answer them to the best of my ability : )
